"Draft questions for an Asian school textbook" by Nury Vitachi

My neighbour’s child brought home a school work-sheet. It said: “If Alfie hits a baseball at 10 miles an hour, how long will it take to cross a 176-yard diamond?”     The homework raised all sorts of questions for a child raised in Asia. What kind of name is Al-Fie? What’s a mile? What’s a yard? Even his mother had a question. "Where can you buy a 176-yard diamond?". I explained that baseball was a game played on a “diamond”, but that just got her more excited. “Wah! Everything so big in USA,” she said.

The problem was, of course, that the homework sheet had been photocopied from an ancient textbook designed for kids in the west. Asia needs Asian textbooks. We need local homework projects. C’mon, teachers. They’re not that hard to dream up. Here are some to get you started:

            1. If Lee copies 1,000 CDs a day and sells them for one US dollar each, how long before he can get into Harvard?

2. If an Asian city’s public transport city is built to move a million people in one day, how many people does it move in one day? (a) Three million, (b) four million, or (c) five million?
3. The dean of a high class technical college wants a new US$100,000 swimming pool for his home, and the Daswanis want their son Ravindra to get into computer engineering. Should the dean get a Grecian infinity pool or a resort-style lagoon?
             4. Ah-Li is Prime Minister of a small country in Asia. The constitution says that he cannot serve more than four years. How long does Ah-Li remain in power? (a) 20 years (b) 30 years (c) he’s still there, despite having resigned, retired and lost his mind.
            5. If Xiao Wang wants an 800 yuan overseas travel permit, and each of the six officials who need to be bribed wants 100 yuan, how reliable are the country’s GDP figures?
            6. In Western-style monarchies, the leader of a country retires by handing power to a member of his family.  Asian republics are (a) pretty much the same, (b) pretty much the same, or (c) identical.

Now, will someone please tell the school textbook writers?

 Value :)
A well known speaker started off his seminar by holding up a $20 bill. In the room of 200, he asked, "Who would like this $20 bill?"
Hands started going up.
He said, "I am going to give this $20 to one of you but first, let me do this." He proceeded to crumple the dollar bill up.
He then asked, "Who still wants it?"
Still the hands were up in the air.
"Well," he replied, "What if I do this?" And he dropped it on the ground and started to grind it into the floor with his shoe.
He picked it up, now all crumpled and dirty. "Now who still wants it?" Still the hands went into the air.
"My friends, you have all learned a very valuable lesson. No matter what I did to the money, you still wanted it because it did not decrease in value. It was still worth $20.
Many times in our lives, we are dropped, crumpled, and ground into the dirt by the decisions we make and the circumstances that come our way.
We feel as though we are worthless. But no matter what has happened or what will happen, you will never lose your value. You are special - Don't ever forget it!

Heaven Can Wait
A woman was worried whether or not her dead husband made it to heaven, so she decided to try to contact his spirit by having a seance.
Sure enough, after the usual mumbo-jumbo of calling to the spirits, her husband's voice was heard answering, "Hello Margaret, this is meeee..."
"Fred," she answered. I just have to know if you're happy there in the afterlife. What's it like there?"
"Ooooooh, it's much more beautiful here than I ever imagined," Fred answered. "The sky is bluer, the air is cleaner, and the pastures are much more lush and green than I ever expected. And the only thing we do, all day long, are eat and sleep, eat and sleep, over and over."
"Thank God, you made it to heaven," his wife cried.
"Heaven?" he answered. "What heaven? I'm a buffalo in Montana.
Cause Of Death
When her husband passed away, the wife put the usual death notice in the newspaper, but added that he had died of gonorrhea.
Once the daily newspapers had been delivered, a good friend of the family phoned and complained bitterly, "You know very well that he died of diarrhea, not gonorrhea."
Replied the widow, "Yes, I know that he died of diarrhea, but I thought it would be better for posterity to remember him as a great lover rather than the big shit that he really was.

I can see how quotes and sayings can change a person,

I can see how quotes and sayings can really comfort them,

I can see how quotes and sayings can twist someone's view towards life.

It is somehow a tool - to survive when you find that nothing can make you feels better but words.

laziness..

Laziness is a state of inaction. It's something that you do, not something that you are. Being lazy means you have no motivation to do anything. This is the obvious but the mistake that many people make is identifying themselves as someone who is lazy. In this article, I'm going to share with you something that will help you see this state of inaction in a different way. There is a huge difference between saying you act lazy sometimes and you are a lazy person. One is suggesting that your laziness is temporary while the other suggests that it's permanent. This is the myth of laziness. People who are lazy aren't lazy.So what causes a person to be inactive? The answer is a lack of goals and purpose. If you give someone a good enough reason to do something, they will do it. People who don't seem to do anything just haven't found a good enough reason to do anything. Lazy students don't study because they don't see the point in studying. If you give them a reason, a strong enough reason that is, they will take action.to overcome laziness,we should comes down to finding enough reasons to take action. Action will lead to success while inaction will lead to failure.

It's Funny ! ^_^v

It is funny, how hello always ends with a goodbye,
It is funny, how good memories can start to make you cry.
It is funny, how forever never really seems to last,
It is funny, how much you would lose if you forgot about your past.
It is funny, how people happy to see when you're down,
It is funny, how when you need someone they`re never around.
It is funny, how people change and think they`re so much better,
It is funny, how many lies can be packed in one "love letter".
It is funny, how people forgive even though they can't forget,
It is funny, how one night can contain so much regret.
It is funny, how ironic life turns out to be,
But the funniest part of all, none of these are funny to me.

have u ever?? ^_^v

Have you ever wondered which hurt the most? Saying something and wishing you hadn't? Or saying nothing and wishing you had? I guess the most important things are the hardest things to say. Don't be afraid to tell someone you love them. If you do, they might break your heart. If you don't, you might break theirs.

Have you ever decided not to become a couple because you were so afraid of what you already had with that person? Your heart decides whom it likes and whom it doesn't. You can't tell your heart what to do. It does on its own when you least suspect it, or even when you don't want it to.

Have you ever wanted to love someone with everything you had, but that other person was too afraid to let you? Too many of us stay walled up because we were too afraid to care too much; For fear that the other person does not care as much, or even at all.

Have you ever denied your feelings for someone because you fear of rejection was too hard to handle? We tell lies when we are afraid; Afraid of what we don't know, afraid of what will others think, afraid of what will be found out about us. But every time we tell a lie, the thing we fear grows stronger. Life is all about risk and it requires you to jump. Don't be a person who has to look back and wonder what they would have done, or could have had.

There comes a point in your life when you realize who matters, who never did, who won't anymore, and who always will. Don't worry about people from your past, there's a reason why they didn't make it to your future.

friendship..

True friendship is a life time achievement, and a friend is the path through
whom huge sentimental, spiritual and even material blessings gush. Interacting
warmly with family and friends is a super pressure reducer. Instead of our minds
working ultimately on troublesome harms, it is occupied with thoughts of other
things and other people. Warm friendship is like fine fitness; value it while you
have it. People have a fundamental need to be liked themselves, and by showing your
admiration of them, they will return your feelings. Admire given out honestly is
a immense act of friendship.Be kind, soft, calm, and a good listener. Attempt to seek the positive elements not the terrible qualities in people. It is sad that so many either reject God's
friendship or take it for granted. That may be one clarification as to why we
do not know how to be friends to each other. Our friends fill our lives with
joy. When our friends hurt, we're there to soothe. We desire to know the lot about
our friends and find out in life that we really need them. Friends are people we
commit to; without true friendship life feels very lonely and incomplete

cracking your knuckles does not actually hurt your bones or cause arthritis.

Cracking your knuckles (or any of your joints) can have therapeutic benefits. When you crack one of your joints you are pulling the bones that are connected at the joint apart from each other. This process stimulates your tendons, relaxes your muscles, and loosens your joints. Chiropractors do this for spinal joints when your back is sore and stiff, but you can do this on your own for your knuckles, toes, knees, neck, etc.

Unfortunately, there can be too much of a good thing. Cracking your knuckles will never lead to arthritis (despite what your mom keeps telling you), but scientists have discovered that it can cause tissue damage in the affected joints. Knuckle-cracking pulls your finger bones apart which stretches your ligaments. Too much stretching of your ligaments will cause damage to your fingers akin to the arm injuries sustained by a baseball pitcher who throws too many pitches. In addition to making your hand really sore, this ligament damage can also result in reduced grip strength.

How does this work? Your joints, the places in your body where you can bend, are where your bones intersect and are held together by ligaments. These joints are surrounded by a liquid called synovial fluid. When you stretch your ligaments by pulling the bones apart to crack your knuckles a gas in the synovial fluid escapes and turns into a bubble. This process is called cavitation. Cavitation ends when the bubble eventually bursts, producing that popping sound we know and love. After that, your joints won't be able to crack for another 25-30 minutes while the gas gets reabsorbed into the synovial fluid.

My Dreams and the Balloons

My dreams are like a balloon. I don't know why in my head right now only think about a blue balloon. Lol. Blowing the balloon feel like floating my dreams in it. My balloon is just nice for now. Not that big neither any smalls.

I have a few dreams. And I'm working on it. Can I push the limit without crossing the boundaries? Can I blow it more without "pop!" It out? Blow require efforts. Same goes to dreams.

I will. Let's try. Let's see. And if my balloon still want to explode, and if nothing I can do to save it, it's okay I guess. I will try another balloon. Never give up. NEVER SAY NEVER. Ahaha

freah pineapples destroy Jell-O!They can even dissolve your tongue!!

An enzyme in pineapples called bromelain destroys proteins! If you try to put fresh pineapple slices into your Jell-O, the bromelain will break down the gelatin. If you tried to mix it with Jell-O mix and put it in the fridge, it’ll stay in liquid form instead of turning it to Jell-O. Canned pineapples don’t have bromelain, so you can put those in your Jell-O instead.

Bromelain can also be used to ruin a perfectly good steak. A little bit can be added to tenderize the meat, but if you leave it in the steak for a couple days, it gets really mushy. It has the same effect on human tongues. However, your tongue regenerates cells quickly, so you don’t have to worry about eating pineapple (unless you’re allergic).

PARTYYY????

salam,,hye guys,
is it true that our class want to make a party nx week?

50 Dollars is 50 Dollars

Morris and his wife Esther went to the state fair every year, and every year Morris would say, 'Esther, I'd like to ride in that helicopter. 'Esther always replied, 'I know Morris, but that helicopter ride is 50 dollars and 50 dollars is 50 dollars.'
One year Esther and Morris went to the fair, and Morris said, 'Esther I'm 85 years old. if I don't ride that helicopter, I might never get another chance.' Esther replied, 'Morris that helicopter is 50 dollars and 50 dollars is 50 dollars.' The pilot over heard the couple and said, 'folks I'll make you a deal. I'll take the both of you for a ride; if you can stay quiet for the entire ride and not say a word I won't charge you! but if you say one word, it's 50 dollars.'
Morris and Esther agreed and up they went. the pilot did all kinds of fancy manoeuvres, but not a word was heard. he did his dare devil tricks over and over again, but still not a word. When they landed, the pilot turned to Morris and said, 'by golly, I did everything I could to get you to yell out, but you didn't . I'm impressed!'
Morris replied, 'well I almost said something when Esther fell out, but, you know, 50 dollars is 50 dollars!'

The Worry Tree: A Useful and Warm-Hearted Story :)

Paresh, an Indian carpenter I once hired to help me restore my old farmhouse had just finished a difficult and hard first day on the job. A flat tyre on his lorry made him lose an hour of work, his electric saw packed in, and now his ancient pickup truck refused to start. While I drove him home, Paresh sat in stony, thoughtful silence.
On arriving, Paresh, in the way of all Indian gentlefolk, invited me in to meet his family. As we walked toward the front door, he paused briefly at a small tree, touching the tips of the branches with both hands.
When opening the door to his home, he underwent an amazing transformation. His tanned face wreathed in smiles and he hugged his two small children and gave his wife a kiss.
After a cup of tea, he walked me to my car. We passed the tree and my curiosity got the better of me. I asked him about what I had seen him do earlier.
'Oh, that's my trouble tree,' Paresh replied. 'I know I can't help having troubles on the job, but one thing for sure, troubles don't belong in the house with my wife and the children. So I just hang them on the tree every night when I come home. Then in the morning I pick them up again. Funny thing is', he smiled winningly, 'when I come out in the morning to pick them up, there aren't nearly as many as I remember hanging up the night before.

Catch a Rabbit

The LAPD, The FBI, and the CIA are all trying to prove that they are the best at apprehending criminals. The President decides to give them a test. He releases a rabbit into a forest and each of them has to catch it.

The CIA goes in.

They place animal informants throughout the forest. They question all plant and mineral witnesses. After three months of extensive investigations they conclude that rabbits do not exist.

The FBI goes in.

After two weeks with no leads they burn the forest, killing everything in it, including the rabbit, and they make no apologies. The rabbit had it coming.

The LAPD goes in.

They come out two hours later with a badly beaten bear. The bear is yelling: "Okay! Okay! I'm a rabbit! I'm a rabbit!"

The Praying Hands
Below is a touching story about DURERS Praying Hands that is circulated widely.
It tells of DURER doing his creation in appreciation of a brother who went to work in the mines to support Albrecht's education.
Back in the fifteenth century, in a tiny village near Nuremberg, lived a family with eighteen children. Eighteen! In order merely to keep food on the table for this mob, the father and head of the household, a goldsmith by profession, worked almost eighteen hours a day at his trade and any other paying chore he could find in the neighborhood. Despite their seemingly hopeless condition, two ofAlbrecht Durer the Elder's children had a dream. They both wanted to pursue their talent for art, but they knew full well that their father would never be financially able to send either of them toNuremberg to study at the Academy.
After many long discussions at night in their crowded bed, the two boys finally worked out a pact. They would toss a coin. The loser would go down into the nearby mines and, with his earnings, support his brother while he attended the academy. Then, when that brother who won the toss completed his studies, in four years, he would support the other brother at the academy, either with sales of his artwork or, if necessary, also by laboring in the mines.
They tossed a coin on a Sunday morning after church. Albrecht Durer won the toss and went off to Nuremberg. Albert went down into the dangerous mines and, for the next four years, financed his brother, whose work at the academy was almost an immediate sensation. Albrecht's etchings, his woodcuts, and his oils were far better than those of most of his professors, and by the time he graduated, he was beginning to earn considerable fees for his commissioned works.
When the young artist returned to his village, the Durer family held a festive dinner on their lawn to celebrate Albrecht's triumphant homecoming. After a long and memorable meal, punctuated with music and laughter, Albrecht rose from his honored position at the head of the table to drink a toast to his beloved brother for the years of sacrifice that had enabled Albrecht to fulfill his ambition. Hisclosing words were, "And now, Albert, blessed brother of mine, now it is your turn. Now you can go to Nuremberg to pursue your dream, and I will take care of you."
All heads turned in eager expectation to the far end of the table where Albert sat, tears streaming down his pale face, shaking his lowered head from side to side while he sobbed and repeated, over and over, "No ...no ...no ...no."
Finally, Albert rose and wiped the tears from his cheeks. He glanced down the long table at the faces he loved, and then, holding his hands close to his right cheek, he said softly, "No, brother. I cannot go to Nuremberg. It is too late for me. Look ... look what four years in the mines have done to my hands! The bones in every finger have been smashed at least once, and lately I have been suffering from arthritis so badly in my right hand that I cannot even hold a glass to return your toast, much less make delicate lines on parchment or canvas with a pen or a brush. No, brother ...
for me it is too late."
More than 450 years have passed. By now, Albrecht Durer's hundreds of masterful portraits, pen and silver-point sketches, watercolors, charcoals, woodcuts, and copper engravings hang in every great museum in the world, but the odds are great that you, like most people, are familiar with only one of Albrecht Durer's works. More than merely being familiar with it, you very well may have a reproduction hanging in your home or office.
One day, to pay homage to Albert for all that he had sacrificed, Albrecht Durer painstakingly drew his brother's abused hands with palms together and thin fingers stretched skyward. He called his powerful drawing simply "Hands," but the entire world almost immediately opened their hearts to his great masterpiece and renamed his tribute of love "The Praying Hands."
The next time you see a copy of that touching creation, take a second look. Let it be your reminder, if you still need one, that no one - no one - - ever makes it alone!
